Tennessee Governor Balks At Judicial Elections
June 13, 2008
Post Politics, the Nashville Post’s blog, reports that TN Governor Phil Bredesen – who fought valiantly to bring the state’s judicial selection commission out from behind closed doors, only to be rebuffed by the legislature – has come out against restoring the right of Tennessee voters to decide who sits on the bench.
In the past, Gov. Bredesen sued the commission for simply sending up the same nominees he had previously rejected. It’s disappointing that a political leader with such an acute sense of the problems of secret judicial selections won’t trust the same voters who elected him to pick the state’s judges.
