Democratic Scheme Backfires In Michigan

Michigan Democratic Party chair Mark Brewer made defeating Michigan Supreme Court Justice Cliff Taylor his top priority in November. But following the spectacular implosion of a Brewer-supported scheme to rewrite Michigan’s Constitution, attorney Marietta Robinson, the leading Democratic contender for Taylor’s seat, appears to be backing away.

Detroit Free Press columnist Brian Dickerson reports that Robinson has “decided against a Supreme Court run after concluding that the ballot initiative is both indefensible and likely to divert attention from any Democratic challenger.” Right Michigan has a more in-depth take on this development.

While every respectable opinion outlet in Michigan has condemned the secret ploy to seize control of Michigan’s courts and the state redistricting process, Brewer rushed to jump on this sinking ship. Maybe he had no choice; both Gov. Granholm and Lt. Gov. Cherry – at Brewer’s behest? – funneled campaign money into “research, polling, focus groups, etc.” to help develop the court-packing plan.

Reform Michigan Government Now’s proposed constitutional amendment is now a smoking hole. When will Gov. Granholm and Lt. Gov. Cherry order Brewer and his cohorts to stop their efforts to get this bogus petition on the ballot?
