The Politics of “Merit” Selection in Florida

The Palm Beach Post has a good summary of the “high-stakes battle” in Florida over the retention of three Florida Supreme Court justices, all chosen under “merit” selection, who have been accused of using state employees to help file paperwork in their retention election campaigns. The three justices “are suiting up for a political battle that is expected to include television spots and newspaper ads,” according to the report. So much for the idea that “merit” selection removes politics from the judicial selection process.
