Florida Justices Hit the Campaign Trail
August 21, 2012
Three Florida Supreme Court justices are “touring news organizations throughout the state” in an effort to “inform voters about how appellate judges are kept on the bench.” No doubt we’ll soon see a bevy of friendly editorials instructing Florida voters it is their duty to retain the justices who will be on the ballot this November.
The Florida Bar is also scheduled to release the results of a lawyers-only poll in order to persuade voters to rubber-stamp judges the Bar itself played such a huge role in placing on the bench. Apparently it’s OK for judges to campaign, OK for judges to raise money, and OK for special interest groups like the Bar to try to pressure voters … but the second any citizen or organization dares to suggest that a judge ought not be retained, it’s a threat to judicial independence.
